The Winelands of the Western Cape in South Africa are a huge draw for national and international visitors alike, for the wine tasting certainly, but also for the spectacular beauty, rich history and gastronomic excellence.

Committed to providing our visitors with the latest news and insights, we are constantly visiting wine estates and trying wines, to ensure we can share with you some of our favourites. Each month we feature a wine or wine estate that we love - it's a tough job but someone has to do it.


Our Favourite Wine of the month

September 2009: Vruchtbaar Cabernet Sauvignon 2004


Richard Holt, resident wine guru of Travel Concepts reports on his wine recommendation for the month,

"On Sunday evening with friends, we drank my very last bottle of 2004 Vruchtbaar Cabernet Sauvignon and I finally realised what I had known all along; that this wine is one of my very favourite Cabernet Sauvignons.

From a small boutique winery in the beautiful Robertson valley this wine sits under many people's radar screens, however, all my friends who have tasted it around our dinner table over the last few years have all said the same thing, "Wow! What is this?"

A real hidden gem, it retails for around R70 a bottle making it outstanding value in our book. But you will have to look hard to find this wine as it is a limited edition and most wine stores don't stock it. We suggest a visit to the winery itself which is open by appointment only or order it online from La Verne Wine Shop in the centre of Robertson.

So my final bottle of 2004 has gone and I am desperately trying to find more. However the good news is that the 2005 is also excellent and has been awarded four stars in the Platters Guide to South African Wines."
