Wine
The Winelands of the Western Cape in South Africa are a huge draw for national and international visitors alike,
for the wine tasting certainly, but also for the spectacular beauty, rich history and gastronomic excellence.
Committed to providing our visitors with the latest news and insights, we are constantly visiting wine estates and trying
wines, to ensure we can share with you some of our favourites. Each month we feature a wine or wine estate that we love - it's a tough job but someone has to do it.
Our Favourite Wine of the month
May 2009: Redhill Pinotage - Simonsig Estate, Stellenbosch
This month our friend Kevin Gallagher Managing Director of SA Wines Online www.sawinesonline.co.uk the UK's Specialist South African online wine retailer, shares his love of the Redhill Pinotage from the Simonsig Estate near Stellenbosch.
"A limited release in my opinion this is one of the very best examples of Pinotage, a red wine unique to South Africa and I highly recommend it to international visitors tasting Pinotage for the first time.
With a dark dense colour, rich fruit onto the palate and a subtle spicy oak it has been matured for 16 months in mainly French oak. Built for the test of time, the new 2007 release will build upon the 2004, 2005 and 2006 which have all won multiple wine awards"
Kevin also suggests combining a wine tasting with lunch at "Cuvee" Simonsig's new restaurant which has been getting rave reviews. We took him up on his suggestion and have to say we totally agree with him - and yes Kevin they are the best "roast potatoes" around.
