Our Favourite Restaurant of the Month
Carne - Central Cape Town
This month our MD Richard took a couple of friends for dinner and says of the experience,
"Fine dining for carnivores, so if "meat is your treat" then this is the place to go during your stay in Cape Town.
Sister restaurant to critically acclaimed 95 on Keerom, Carne is tucked away in a quiet cul-de-sac just off the bustling Long Street in the centre of town. Down a long staircase into the basement restaurant (with a cool cocktail bar above) the setting is stylish and sleek and the service slick and professional. Don't expect complex dishes and rich sauces, this restaurant is about the best cuts of meat, but also has an Italian twist due to the influence of the Italian owner/chef. The range of cuts are brought to your table beforehand for you to choose and the food is simple and expertly prepared. The T- bone is the signature dish, it looked huge and there were cuts of meat I'd never heard of- like hangar steak (it's from near the kidneys apparently and should only be served rare).
I started with an excellent Kudu tartar and followed it with the best rib eye steak I have had for a long time! My European friends tucked into starters of lamb ravioli followed by plates of Kudu, Ostrich and Black Wildebeest, with simple side dishes of vegetables and crisp fries. From the small but select wine list, we washed it down with a bottle of excellent Meinert Merlot and we all toasted to an enjoyable evening"
